AI-Built Websites Aren’t Ready for Local Service Businesses (And Here’s Why)

I use AI every day, and I love it.

It helps me write better code, brainstorm ideas, improve content, and work much faster than I could on my own.

But there’s a big difference between using AI as a tool and letting AI build your entire website.

That’s where things start to fall apart, and why a tool like Lovable, which excels at creating web apps (I use it all the time for web app development), should not be used for a local business website.

Most AI website builders create something that looks finished. It looks clean. It looks professional. It might even impress you at first glance.

But a website that looks great can still be terrible for your business.

And a cheap website can save you upfront but end up costing you tens of thousands in lost revenue to your competitors.

Here are six reasons why.

1. You lose control over getting found.

Your website needs to do more than look good. It needs to help people find you.

That means controlling page titles, headings, internal links, schema, page speed, and dozens of other details that influence Google and AI-powered search.

There’s a reason professional developers overwhelmingly build on WordPress. It powers about 43% of all websites and nearly 60% of the highest-traffic sites. That didn’t happen by accident.

WordPress gives you control.

Most AI website builders give you convenience instead.

If all you want is a website online quickly, that’s fine. But if you want people to actually find your business, control still matters.

2. Security gets overlooked.

If your website only lists your phone number and business hours, security probably isn’t a major concern.

But most business websites collect information through contact forms, quote requests, appointment scheduling, customer portals, or online payments.

Research has found that nearly half of AI-generated code contains security vulnerabilities.

That’s one reason I use AI to assist me, not replace me.

3. Updates become harder over time.

Businesses change.

You add services. Change pricing or hours. Hire new employees. Expand into new markets.

A good website should grow with your business.

WordPress is built for that. There are proven tools for just about everything you want to do.

AI-generated websites can be much harder to maintain with no visual editor, and often no way to add tracking codes to specific pages. Instead, you use a prompt and a simple change can affect something else, and when it does, you’re often dependent on the platform instead of someone who understands your website.

4. Accessibility is still your responsibility.

Your website should work for everyone.

That means readable text, proper color contrast, keyboard navigation, image descriptions, and forms that work with screen readers.

That responsibility still belongs to you.

In 2025, more than 5,100 federal accessibility lawsuits were filed. Building accessibility into your website from the beginning is much easier than trying to fix problems later.

5. Make sure you actually own your website.

Before you commit to any website platform, ask a few simple questions.

  • Can you move your website somewhere else?
  • Can another developer work on it?
  • Do you own the website files?
  • Do you own your domain name?

Some AI website platforms make moving away difficult.

It’s much better to know that before you build your website than after.

6. AI doesn’t know what makes your business different.

This is the biggest one.

AI can build pages.

It can write content.

It can even make a website look impressive.

But it doesn’t know why your customers choose you instead of your competitors.

It doesn’t ask the right questions.

It doesn’t uncover what makes your business different.

It doesn’t understand the Greater La Crosse Area market, your competitors, or the concerns your customers have before they ever pick up the phone.

That’s where experience still matters.

A successful website isn’t just a collection of pages. It’s a marketing tool designed to persuade someone to choose your business over the one down the street.

That’s something AI still struggles to do well.

The Bottom Line

AI is a great tool, but your website is more than just another business expense. It’s one of your most important marketing assets. It should help people find you, build trust, and make you the obvious choice.

So while AI can certainly help build a website, building a website that consistently brings you customers still takes strategy, experience, and an understanding of your business, your customers, and your local market. To the best of my knowledge, AI is not capable of this, or I would be using it myself.
